Well it’s the end of the first week back at school and we’re back into the school day routine. Well at least I am, Ami seems to be still on holiday when it comes to getting up in the morning.

This time last year Ami was just starting school. It was a big emotional wrench, even though she previously went to nursery, going to school just seemed so much more grown up.

Like every parent of a foundation class child I was desperate to find out what she had been doing during the day. Miss Bruce used to prime them with a word or phrase about what they were doing such as ‘penguins’ ‘counting’ or ’Grace Darling’. It did lead to an interesting discussion (for discussion read: trying to work out what she meant) with our then four year old when she came out of class in the second week and announced they had ’ants crawling up their arms’ (those with kids who’ve done the phonetic alphabet will know all about ants crawling up your arms…).

Any other questions about her day resulted in one of three stock answers, that I now know every child gives: ‘I don’t know’, ’I can’t remember’ and my personal favourite ‘nothing’. I did wonder why I was sending her to school if she did nothing all day, every day!

One year on we get a bit more detail. Short takes on daily key events that are important to Ami. These are this weeks shorties:

  • Monday: Mrs Holding used to be Miss Powell but she got married whilst I was on holiday. We have to keep calling her Mrs Holding so she doesn’t forget who she is.
  • Tuesday: We did PE again! We did PE yesterday. I think Mrs Holding might have forgot we did it yesterday.
  • Wednesday: We had to sing for lunchtime.
  • Thursday: We just did play until lunchtime, then we did work, work, work, work, work, work, work and then it was hometime.
  • Friday: We had a big play this morning and then we went to the library.

So a bit more detail but I’m still not neccessarily any the wiser.
